Consider this post an expanded dictionary entry for a collection of related terms used in personal development conversations. For example, What are your values?
Values are the personal rules by which you make decisions about right and wrong, should and shouldn’t, good and bad. They are the deeply held beliefs that guide your behaviours and decisions.
- Beliefs are the feelings of being confident that something is right.
- Behaviours are the actions we take. Things we do!
- Decisions are choices we make about something after thinking about several possibilities.
Principles are standards of behaviour we accept.
Skill is an ability to do an activity or job well, mostly because you have practised it.
Competency is an essential skill that is needed to do a job.
An objective is something which you plan to do or achieve.
- A goal is an aim or purpose.
- The aim is the result that your plan or actions are meant to achieve.
- The purpose is why you do something? Or why something exists.
- Achieve is to succeed in finishing something; reaching an aim, especially after a lot of work and effort.
Knowledge is an understanding of or information about something which a person gets by experience or study. It exists in your mind or is generally known by people.
Judgement is the ability to form opinions and make decisions (hopefully good ones)
Ability is the mental or physical power or skill required to do something.
An attribute is a quality or characteristic that someone or something has.
